About the Iowa Dental Association

The Iowa Dental Association is the ADA constituent (state) society for Iowa, home to more than 1,800 member dentists representing roughly 80% of the state's licensed dentists — a high market-share figure for a state association.

As part of the ADA tripartite structure, IDA membership links the dentist to the American Dental Association nationally and to one of the IDA's ten district (component) dental societies locally. The IDA's core activities include legislative and regulatory advocacy, continuing education (its IDEAS annual session), member practice resources, and support for the University of Iowa dental pipeline. Its staff is led by Executive Director Laurie Traetow.

The IDA describes its districts as the mechanism by which "each of these groups work with the dentist in their communities to exchange information and assess the needs of their part of the state," giving the association statewide reach from urban Des Moines to rural counties.

Annual Meeting: IDEAS (Iowa Dental Association Annual Session) — branded "IDEAS26" for 2026

Spring; Des Moines. IDEAS 2026 runs April 30 - May 2, 2026 at the Iowa Events Center, 730 3rd St, Des Moines, IA 50309.

IDEAS is the IDA's flagship CE-and-exhibits gathering, combining clinical courses, an exhibit hall, and team-wide programming for the whole dental office. Open to dentists, dental assistants, dental hygienists, office staff, and graduate/dental students.

Iowa Dental Market Snapshot

  • Major metros: Des Moines (and Johnston/West Des Moines suburbs), Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Davenport/Quad Cities, Waterloo, Dubuque, Sioux City.
  • ~1,800+ IDA-member dentists with strong rural coverage; many practices are independent or small-group, especially outside the Des Moines and Quad Cities metros.
  • DSO presence is growing but the market remains comparatively independent; rural recall and after-hours coverage are recurring front-desk pain points.

AI Front Desk for Iowa Practices

Iowa's dental market is geographically spread across many small and rural communities served by ten IDA district societies, where solo and small-group practices often lack depth at the front desk. An AI dental receptionist can absorb missed-call and after-hours scheduling for these practices, keep recall queues full, and free limited staff for chairside work — a strong fit for the independent-leaning Iowa market between Des Moines, the Quad Cities, and the rural districts.
