About the Illinois State Dental Society

The Illinois State Dental Society was founded in 1865 by dentists in Chicago — the same year and city that gave rise to the Chicago Dental Society's Midwinter Meeting. The ISDS is the ADA constituent (state) society for Illinois and ranks as the fifth-largest membership state in the ADA, reflecting Illinois' large and metro-heavy dentist population. Its headquarters is in Springfield, the state capital, positioning it for legislative advocacy with the Illinois General Assembly.

The ISDS advocates on behalf of Illinois dentists (dental insurance reform, Medicaid, scope of practice, licensure), provides continuing education and practice resources, and operates within the ADA tripartite structure — members belong to the ADA, the ISDS, and a local component society. The society employs a professional staff including a Government Relations Director, reflecting an active state-lobbying function.

Structurally, the ISDS is organized into the Chicago District (the Chicago Dental Society) plus seven downstate districts, and a broader set of 22 local components in total. Governance includes a House of Delegates and elected officers, with district representation feeding statewide leadership.

The Chicago Dental Society (CDS) is the standout component: it is the largest local component dental society in the ADA and runs the internationally known Midwinter Meeting. CDS serves Cook, Lake and DuPage counties and is internally divided into nine branches.

Annual Meeting: Chicago Dental Society Midwinter Meeting

Late February, McCormick Place West, Chicago. (2026 = the 161st Midwinter Meeting, Feb. 19-21, 2026.)

The Midwinter Meeting is a global draw — hundreds of CE courses, a massive exhibit hall, and attendees from across the U.S. and internationally. More than 20,000 dental professionals attended the 160th-anniversary meeting (Feb. 2025); it is one of the largest dental conventions in North America (run by the CDS component, not the ISDS directly).
