About the District of Columbia Dental Society

The District of Columbia Dental Society (DCDS), founded in 1866, is the American Dental Association's constituent society for Washington, DC — functionally equivalent to a state chapter even though DC is not a state. It represents over 500 dentists practicing in and around the District, operating within the ADA tripartite membership model (national ADA + DCDS + ADA membership; DC is geographically compact, so DCDS itself serves the "local" function rather than maintaining numerous sub-components).

DCDS provides advocacy on District dental policy and licensure matters, continuing education, peer networking, and member services such as the Member Center with licensure resources. Because DC sits at the heart of national dental politics (the ADA itself maintains a Washington presence), the DCDS plays an outsized role in federal-adjacent advocacy relative to its size.

The DCDS Foundation supports oral-health charity and scholarships, including scholarships for students enrolled at the Howard University College of Dentistry. Distinct from DCDS, the Robert T. Freeman Dental Society serves as the Washington, DC chapter of the National Dental Association (historically Black professional dentistry).

Annual Meeting: DCDS Annual Session / CE meeting

Washington, DC

DCDS runs continuing-education programming and an annual membership meeting; many DC dentists also attend the ADA's national SmileCon and regional meetings. Confirm specifics at dcdental.org.

Component & Local Dental Societies

DC is a single compact jurisdiction; the DCDS itself is the local/constituent body rather than a network of county components (unlike Maryland or Virginia). The separately organized Robert T. Freeman Dental Society is the DC chapter of the National Dental Association and operates alongside (not under) DCDS.

Licensing Board

District of Columbia Board of Dentistry (within DC Health / Department of Health, Health Regulation and Licensing Administration)

The board licenses and regulates dentists — distinct from the DCDS, which is a voluntary membership and advocacy body.
